Change – Positive & Negative

As we live our lives sometimes we get into a rut and then something major happens and you begin making changes for the better, but at the time they are happening you are wondering is this the right choice for my life. We really have no way of knowing for sure except by how we feel we are being led to go, or as some say your gut instinct kicks in. A major change is happening in my life as we are moving from a home we have lived in for 17 years to some place new this week.

At first, moving was not something I looked forward to doing because there is all that packing, sorting, tossing, hook ups and turn offs, moving mail, updating accounts with a new address, changing business information and more. Now, I’m just excited for the change, the new place, the new area, the new flow or routine, new neighbors and friends and the possibilities that will develop.

I admit I was someone that after moving sometimes every six months as a child I just didn’t want to move very often as an adult. I wanted to plant myself some place and build memories, but honestly the memories go with you. As you clean out the closets, cabinets, drawers you locate things that make you laugh and things that can make you cry that were past memories. Glancing over those items I realized they are the things that made me who I am today.

You could say I didn’t want to move because I was afraid of change. We all are afraid of things, some very real and strong like spiders or snakes, and then there are other things that are unknown. It’s the unknown for me that I don’t like. I like to be informed, make decisions based on facts and then make a choice. When you are dealing with things you can’t control or don’t know much about it has a fear for some of us that is rather strong.

I hope you don’t let fear get in your way of making decisions that are changes for the better in your life. I know this step of moving for my family is a big one. Some other major changes can be jobs, relocating to a different city or state, having children, dealing with parents that need care, planning for a future or even buying a home. All of these things are considered highly stressful and major changes in people’s lives.

As you think about choices in your life, changes for the better, think about whether or not your hesitation is fear and get excited about the possibilities once you move forward.

Overcome & Do (ACT) Action Changes Things

I recently heard my mentor talk about what have you overcome that was holding you back from doing your goals and dreams? He also said will you be in the same place at Christmas of this year that you were last year? Well, both of those questions are quite poignant and must be answered with honesty.

To start with I have overcome a couple things in the last year that were major hurdles for me that I didn’t even realize were until I just started working towards my goals and dreams. One of those hurdles was myself. I was someone that thought positively until something went wrong and then it was ‘whoa is me’ for a while and then time would pass and nothing would have changed due to that attitude. You also tend to ask ‘why’ a lot when you are like that.

The other statement, will you be where you were last year at the end of this year? No, I will not. I have learned that the art of doing changes everything in your life. Those goals or dreams start looking within reach because you are doing things to move yourself forward towards them. These two questions caused me to reflect and I can honestly say that I won’t be where I was at the end of this year compared to last year.

Here are some steps I took to make a difference in my life.

  1. I focused on what I was truly passionate about…my photography and my writing. I didn’t allow other things to sneak in there and cause me to divert my attention to them.
  2. I wrote down a list of what I needed to do for each area and began doing tasks to move me forward. (Such as this website for my photography.)
  3. I began doing. Writing isn’t something you say I want to write a book and you just sit down and are done in one session. Writing 100,000 words for a book takes time that you have to be willing to commit to each day of each week even if it was only 500 words.
  4. I took my calendar of an already busy schedule and planned in times to take photographs and planned in my time to write. My family, were aware of these times and were helpful to keep me on task when things ran over into my time.
  5. I learned that even if I didn’t feel creative I went and worked on my goals anyway and while in the midst of starting I would find inspiration to move forward and make true progress.

Accomplishing a goal or dream doesn’t take just thinking about it, you have to actually do something. Decide what you wish to do and create a list of what it will take and begin doing. You will be excited with your progress, you will be doing instead of talking about it, you will inspire others that are close to you to know that these dreams are coming true for you. Turn your 80% of dreaming into 80% of doing and only 20% of dreaming and life will become what you have always wanted it to be.

Today is the first day of autumn for 2014, what a season of beauty. The change in colors in the tree leaves, the various plants and flowers that only bloom during this time are all so wonderful to view. I hope your eyes are open and you are enjoying the wonder and beauty around you. It would be a shame for you to miss it because you are focused too much on work or earning a living. It only takes a few minutes to look around you and take in the season of change.

Above is a photo I took of trees changing their colors for the season. The funny thing is when I took this image it was late October before they were actually changing. That’s how things are in the desert.

I try to look at each season as a reminder that change is a good thing. Fall signifies that the most to me due to how the leaves change colors before they drop off for the next season. Everyone has things in their lives that they wish to change. Why wait until the beginning of the year to do so? Start now baby steps for anything you wish to do are still steps in the right direction.
